One stop to explore whole South Indian cuisine: Simply South

Indian cuisine… Whenever someone arises a question about it, we generally answer there are just two kinds; One is North Indian and Another is South Indian. Just like we have many diversified languages, cultures and celebrations, we have many diversified cuisine in each state.

Simply South attempts to bring out those diversified cuisines of South India by combining top notch delicacies of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Kerala together.  It’s a brilliant concept introduced by the famous Chef Chalapathy Rao.

Location: It’s located in the New BEL Road right opposite to the Woodland’s showroom on the 3rd Floor above Xtreme Sports bar. Locating this restaurant is quite easy with the landmarks and you can also depend on the Google Maps.

AMBIANCE

Simple… Just like it’s name. The ambient lighting, rich cutleries  and raw textured furnitures are enough to give an elegant look to this simple ambience. Strategically placed frames of cultures, monuments, festival illustrations from all five southern states will definitely grab your attention. The whole ambience is peaceful and the light classical instrumental music in the background fills your soul before stomach. It’s an unique experience.

SERVICE

Since it is a new restaurant service feels bit clumsy and moderately slow. But every operation of stewards is closely  monitored by the management to provide flawless experience to the guests. I’m sure that you won’t notice any hinch in the service and you will surely be pleased by their genuine service.

FOOD

They have divided their menu into 6 major parts each dedicated to cuisines of southern states. Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra, Telangana and Hyderabadi! Yes! Being one of the oldest cuisine, Hyderabadi has a special historical value and loved by all. So, the Hyderabadi cuisine has got it’s own exceptional place in the menu.
Though they serve core south indian dishes, the course of meal they follow is very close to North Indian kind. (Like; Soup & starters at first, main course followed by desserts) However, it’s a kind of different experience.

Tomato Saar: This was served as soup. Though they mentioned it’s origin as Karnataka, taste didn’t felt like Karnataka Tomato Saar. Because, in Karnataka sweetness will be equivalent to the sourness of this dish. Keeping it aside, the taste was just brilliant. The sour and spice combination was just awesome. I enjoyed every sip as it cleared my throat and provided a lovely start to our dining experience.

Mokka Jonna Garelu: It was corn based deep fried dish served as the starter along with soothing light spicy side dish. This is the first time I tasted a Telangana dish and it turned out to be great. It tasted lovely.

Gobi Kempu Bezule: Though its a Mangalorean dish, I tasted it before in Kerala. But here it tasted too good than ever. The crispiness was just perfect.

Muvva Vankaya: When it arrived on our table I thought this is similar to Enegai Gojju which is the speciality of North Karnataka. But upon tasting it felt like it belongs to an entire new league. It was prepared with Andhra Style of cooking by well marinating the baby brinjal and adding the peanut powder for that ultimate twist. Being a non-brinjal lover I adored this dish.

Ulavacharu: This was an absolute treat to the tastebuds. A firm mix of sour and spicy taste just made my day. It became my primary choice to try other dishes with this combination. Extraordinary indeed!

Bendakaya Vepudu: It was neither crispy nor softy… Somewhere in the middle which I generally don’t like. But the taste of this was too good. It can become a nice combination to the Malabar Paratha but when you have other dishes like Ulavacharu this dish looks bit on downside.

Tomato Pappu: I’m introduced to Andhra’s Pappu in very recent years by my foodie friends. I have tasted different kinds of Pappu in different places at Bangalore. Compared to that all this place serves really good quality of Pappu. But the taste wise I felt it was too low on spiciness. However, it was nice to taste with Ragi Sangiti and Paratha.

Ragi Sangiti: I was bit surprised when I saw Raagi Balls on mall table. Then it hit me, what else can be showcase the real south essence in the restaurant dedicated for southern cuisine.  It was perfect and served with warm ghee.

Desserts:
Wow! They have most amazing collection of desserts! No… Don’t expect ice cream, jello, cut fruits or cookies. You’ll get the true south Indian desserts which have been part of our tradition for many centuries. Like Gasagase Payasa, Godhi Haggi, Badam Halwa, Elaneer Payasam, Sheer Kurma, Kubani Ka Meetha. My personal favourites were Gasagase Payasa and Kubani Ka Meetha. I realized the real taste of Kubani Ka Meetha here and I highly recommend this.

EVERYTHING ELSE:

The whole ambience feels pure. I must say hygiene at its best. They do offer valet parking and there is a decent parking space for two wheelers next to the restaurant. They do have live counters for Appam at the entrance. If you are impressed by their pickles and chutney powder you can buy them too. They change their menu every Ugadi which marks as the beginning of new year as per Hindu tradition and they do serve special thali and dishes during festivals which is an attractive factor of this restaurant.

FINAL VERDICT: This restaurant is a tribute to the south Indian culinary history. A perfect place to take your family and elders who still have a string attached to our rich tradition. I recommend this restaurant for a true south Indian experience.

Indulge yourself in a Pure Ghee Fest : Chikkanna Tiffin Room, Cubbonpet, Bengaluru

Have you ever tasted anything which seems to be fallen from Heaven? No??? Then head towards Chikkanna Tiffin Room in Cubbonpet to have their amazing Masala Dosa made with generous portion of pure ghee.

Though this place exist from more than six decades, I came to know about this restaurant very recently through my foodie friends. The reason behind this place not being so popular is simple, people don’t want to share precious gem like Chikkanna Tiffin Room with others.

LOCATION: This place is located in an isolated street of Cubbon Pete just behind Ulsoor Gate Police Station. Google Maps can help you out. If not you can seek guidance from the local. The road which leads to this restaurant is very narrow and often gets jammed. My advice is to drive to this place in a two wheeler.

AMBIENCE

It’s very very basic, small and squeezy… Yes! It feels uncomfortable to dine in such small space bumping into other customers. But this is one of a kind of experience which makes to fall in comfortable zone with fellow guests by admiring the taste of Dosa. Everything is fair for Love and Dosa!
The cash counter is at the door itself and the serving counter is just two steps away from the cash counter. They have managed to keep a hand wash area and a dustbin in such small space. They do have limited seats which can accommodate 6-8 guests. Most of the people prefer stand-eat option and some people like me prefer eating outside the restaurant. Whichever place you choose the soothing taste of Dosa will make you comfortable.

EPIC DOSA

The aroma of the Masala Dosa will surely please you by reaching to your soul. We just stood near the serving counter for more than 15 mins just to treat our nostrils with that incredible aroma of ghee blending with Dosa. The preparation of Dosa looks tempting and as other guests are handed dosa your mouth literally waters without your knowledge.

After such exotic session of whiffing and mouthwatering… When the dosa arrives to your hand on a Banana Leaf it feels like the whole world bowed down before you! And the first bite of the Dosa will feel like pure divine. Why Not, The crispy Masala Dosa which is just out of the Ghee bath gives out an extreme pleasing experience to all your five senses.
The taste of this dosa can not be described in words but each bite will have rich essence of ghee. The outer layer of the dosa will be crispy and the inner part will be soft. The combination of these layers with well grinded spicy chutney and thoroughly mashed potato palya will just enlight your morning by opening your mind. One Full Masala Dosa is enough to overwhelmingly fill your morning calories.

Khaali Dosa at Chikkanna Tiffin Room
They serve two types of Dosas; Masala Dosa and Khaali Dosa
Though both Masala Dosa and Khaali Dosa are born from the same pan, they are completely different and belongs to their own league. Yes! Khaali Dosa will be too soft and the golden colour of the outer circle will definitely tempts you. The presentation of this dosa is even more exotic… it involves;
Layer 1 : Banana Leaf
Layer 2 : Khaali Dosa
Layer 3 : Vegetable Sagu
Layer 4 : Spicy Chutney
Layer 5 : Lots and Lots and Lots of Ghee
You just can’t avoid yourself by drooling over it, The Taste!?? It’s  beyond this universe. The combination of Dosa, Sagu, Chutney and Ghee is so so good and once you finish this dish unknowingly you will be licking your fingers. Banana Leaf has a special quality to enhance the taste of ghee and it can be perfectly experienced in here.

Idli: First Bite! And I fell in confusion!!! Whether this is Idli or bit hardened Butter! Yes it was so soft and delicate. This dish also follows the same pattern of Layers just like Khaali Dosa but it has an entirely different approach towards your tastebuds. Rarely I have tasted Idli with the combination of Sagu and I actually disliked it before. But after tasting Idli with Sagu in Chikkanna Tiffin Room, I just become the fan of it. Lovely!

Except Dosa and Idli they also serve Rice Bath, Pulav and Thatte Idli. Will soon update my blog after tasting everything.

SERVICE: This restaurant is maintained by a family and you can easily make that out by seeing the co-ordination between them. They usually serve the dishes faster even when it is too crowded and best part is they assign the priority very well. Generally, they don’t mind pouring ghee on to your dishes but if you seek ghee repeatedly they will politely tell that Ghee is chargeable. I wish they had an unlimited ghee package so that I could pour the ghee for every bite.

EVERYTHING ELSE: Since it is located in a narrow road (or “Galli” to be precise) parking would be huge problem for four wheelers. But two wheelers can find space in any streets around this restaurant. Hygiene Factor is satisfactory as they serve food on disposable Banana Leaves. Lack of ventilation inside the restaurant might suffocate you. If you wish you can stand outside and have their delicacies peacefully. Pricing is moderate.

FINAL VERDICT: This is one of the top dosa serving place in Bengaluru. If the taste means everything to you then this is the place you must visit. I would say, you must visit this restaurant at least once before you die.

Malgudi Vattika : Where time pauses and even Rewinds

"A man who has no knowledge of his past history, origin and culture is like a Tree without it's Roots"
-R.K. Narayan

Malgudi Vattika seems to be built on this foundation. In this fast paced life of Bengaluru, we humans have become more like a machine valuing future goals, targets and unknown destiny. But very least concerned about our past, history & even our own inheritance tree. We all forget how inspiring is our history and its a best guide to our future. When you visit a place like Malgudi Vattika, you feel like you are looking yourself in the beautiful mirror of Past and from somewhere inside you a string of memory sounds a soft note!

Malgudi Vattika: A brilliantly chosen name for this piece of heaven, Where Malgudi stands for its antique in-house ambiance, Vattika stands for its beautiful outdoor with green garden and landscapes. The name reminds so many things, whether its RK Narayan's fictional illustrations or Shankarnag's popular TV series or the core traditional old Bengaluru. The ambiance here lives up to all those legends. I feel so thankful for Food Bloggers Association of Bangalore (FBAB), for choosing such an iconic place for their 22nd Bloggers Meet.

LOCATION: Its situated on the Mysore Road just 1 KM after Wonder-La gate, typically an hour drive from the central Bengaluru. There are many sign boards placed appropriately for every 200 meters after the Wonder-La in order to guide you accurately. You can also depend on Google Maps as its co-ordinates are accurate.

AMBIANCE: I don't have a perfect word to describe its great ambiance. The overall ambiance catches everyone's eyes. An old bullock cart at the entrance seems like an invitation for a time travel and tempts the guests to take selfies and photographs with it even before stepping into the restaurant. When it comes to the choice of seating you will find it very difficult to choose one place out of those finest seating choices. The front portico which you find at the entrance is perfect for the short breakfast session or for sipping a hot coffee in the evening.

While entering main dining area mind your steps because you will be slipped back to 1950's! Yes, its quite an immense nostalgic feel you can't get rid off as far as you are in this dining hall. Every bits and pieces you find in this hall appears like it is there to tell you a story.

The back portico area opens towards the lawn, it provides a great privacy and a homely feel. This area is decorated with some antiques and the wooden work around is really impressive.

Then comes the epic dine-on-lawn experience. They have specially reserved a table in this area for us bloggers. Though it was a shiny afternoon, the environment was cool. It took us a while for arranging (shuffling!) seats to get shadow, but the whole dining experience in this section was totally awesome.

They have a small party deck which they call as "Halli Katte" (ಹಳ್ಳಿ ಕಟ್ಟೆ) again a perfect synonym. It is specially created for small get-together and celebrations. This space is located on the corner of property and offers perfect privacy.
They have some traditional games which refreshed my childhood memories. Surprisingly, many of my fellow foodies didn't even knew that such a kind of games do exist. Some of the games were as follows:

  • || Snake and Ladder (ಹಾವು ಏಣಿ) ||
  • || Alaguli Mane (ಅಳಗುಳಿ ಮನೆ) ||
  • || Tic Tac Toe (ಒಂಬತ್ತು ಮನೆ ಆಟ) ||
  • || Pagade (ಪಗಡೆ) ||
  • || Lido (ಚೌಕ ಭಾರ) ||
I'm sure that the celebration & gathering will be way too fun with all these games and will definitely keeps guest busy.
The whole property is decorated with lantern like light posts which will add a romantic essence to the evenings. I just loved the whole ambiance.

SERVICE: Very disciplined indeed. Though this restaurant opened just a few months ago, stewards and the managers are well trained. They managed varieties of demands from our members very well. Their North Karnataka style of traditional dress suited that environment very well. People in this restaurant were very soft spoken and courteous.

FOOD

They serve both South Indian & North Indian cuisine including the breakfast. We were welcomed by Lemon Soda drink, it was absolute delight. After travelling so far on bright afternoon, such a drink was really needed to add up some glucose in our veins.
Then they served Butter Milk. Generally we call it as Masala Butter Milk, but here it was too watery and lacked both salt & spices.

Obbattu & Bajji (ಒಬ್ಬಟ್ಟು / ಕಾಯಿ ಹೋಳಿಗೆ & ಬಜ್ಜಿ) :  It was a surprise to see Holige / obbattu at the beginning, but yes, its a north Karnataka tradition to serve Holige at the beginning. It was coconut holige with jaggery mixture. Looking at the colour of Holige I was expecting to be pampered with sweetness but disappointingly there was very little trace of sweetness. For a moment I felt like they are treating me as a diabetic! Apart from that, Chilly Bajji was awesome. It was crunchy, tasty and moderately spicy.

Paneer Tikka : It appeared to me like jugal-bandi of North and South Indian cuisine when Paneer Tikka arrived on my table. However, Paneer Tikka was above average, the sausage used on it wasn't penetrated the paneer deeply, I can't say it was undercooked, but it was poor application of masala which resulted in bland taste.

North Karnataka Jowar Roti Thali (ಉತ್ತರ ಕನ್ನಡ ಜೋಳದ ರೊಟ್ಟಿ ಊಟ) :  Till date Kamath was my favourite destination for Jowar Roti Meal, but now I have a new place with a great ambiance as added bonus. The Thali had variety of colourful dishes and in my views it was an exhibition on proteins & vitamins. It was true to its origin. Side dishes were too good and the ingredients used in it felt very fresh. Though spice level was quite low in some curry, it tasted good with roti. We also tried Poori with the same side dishes, poori was very good. It was soft and tasty.

Makkhi Da Roti & Sarson Da Saag : Whenever I hear Sarson Da Saag my Punjabi memory flashes. I have tasted Sarson Da Saag in many restaurants in Punjab. It might be due to my high level of expectation, this dish din't convinced me here. I felt lot of improvement needed in terms of spice level and cooking method. Makkhi Da Roti on the other hand was quite good.

Veg Pulao & Veg Handi Biriyani : Both were good and rich in ingredients. Vegetables & Paneer used in it was perfectly cooked and gave a great taste. Veg Pulav was bit sweet with lite pan flavor.
Fresh Fruit Juices: I tried Pineapple & Watermelon Juices, both were good and felt fresh!

---------

EVERYTHING ELSE: It will be better if you let servers to move your cutleries and plates. Because every cutleries they use are antique and forged with two metals, its very heavy. There is lot of parking space in the vicinity. As per my observation, they have maintained a good hygiene all over the property.

I'm still not able to understand how one could drive long distance after having such great meal! Frankly seeing such lush greenery environment and having my tummy full I terribly wanted to sleep for a while on that lawn. (Many families were doing so...) Such an exemplary place it is!

FINAL VERDICT: Its not just about food! Its about whole experience! Visiting this restaurant will add a memorable day in your life!
